Byredo Gypsy Water Eau de Parfum 50ml is one of the Stockholm niche house's defining unisex compositions — a woody-aromatic scent inspired by the romantic, free-spirited life of the European Romani people. Composed by Jérôme Epinette and launched in 2008, it pairs juniper, bergamot and pepper on top with a meditative heart of pine needles, incense and orris root, and a soft, second-skin drydown of sandalwood, vanilla and amber.
About Byredo
Byredo is a Stockholm-based luxury brand founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham, internationally known for compositions such as Bal d'Afrique, Mojave Ghost and 1996. The brand's distinctively understated aesthetic — minimalist labels, neutral packaging and emotional, often autobiographical fragrances — helped redefine modern niche perfumery. Gypsy Water remains one of Byredo's most enduring signatures, a perennial top-seller almost two decades after launch.

The story behind Gypsy Water
Ben Gorham conceived Gypsy Water as a homage to the romantic, nomadic life of the Romani people of Europe — woodsmoke, pine forests, leather, and the warmth of vanilla and amber from a fire at night. The composition is deliberately quiet: pine needles and incense in the heart bring meditative outdoor character, while the sandalwood-vanilla-amber base gives it the soft, second-skin warmth that has become a Byredo trademark.
Who it's for
Best for those drawn to soft, woody-aromatic perfumery — natural territory for fans of Diptyque Tam Dao, Le Labo Santal 33 or Maison Margiela By the Fireplace. The vanilla-and-amber drydown gives Gypsy Water a soft, intimate quality that's become a hallmark of modern niche fragrance; the pine-and-juniper opening keeps it crisp rather than sweet. Genuinely unisex; works year-round, with particular appeal in autumn and winter. Performance is famously close-to-skin and close-to-wearer rather than projecting widely.
How to wear it
Spray onto pulse points — wrists, behind the ears, the base of the throat — from around 15 cm away. Gypsy Water is well-known for being close-to-skin; expect moderate projection in the first hour and a soft, woody skin scent for three to six hours. Many wearers apply more generously than they would with a more powerful fragrance, or layer with a matching Byredo body wash or lotion for greater longevity.
